Best Portable Pizza Ovens — 2026 Spec-Tier List
Six portable pizza ovens ranked by spec profile. We define portable strictly: under 35 lbs, no permanent gas line, suitable for camping / tailgating / patio relocation. Ovens like the Ooni Karu 16 (62.6 lbs) or Gozney Arc (84 lbs) are excellent — but not portable.
How we ranked these
Portable pizza ovens have to balance four trade-offs: weight (lower = more portable), fuel flexibility (more options = more versatile), max temp (Neapolitan-capable or NY-capable), and preheat + recovery time (faster = better hosting).
Tiers reflect how well each oven balances all four for the portable use case. Spec sources cited inline.
S-tier — best portable spec profile
Ooni Karu 12G — $449
Why S-tier: Multi-fuel (gas + wood + charcoal) at 27.6 lbs, 950°F max, ceramic insulation, 1-min recovery between pies. Best portability + capability balance in the category. Genuinely takes anywhere.
A-tier — strong portable picks
Ooni Koda 12 — $399
Why A-tier: Cheapest Ooni at 20.4 lbs — most portable of the lineup. Gas-only (less fuel flexibility than Karu) but the simplest setup and quickest preheat. 950°F max, 1-min recovery.
Bertello Grande 1500 — $449
Why A-tier (multi-fuel value): Multi-fuel (gas + wood + charcoal) at 26 lbs. 950°F max, 14-inch stone (larger than Karu 12G's 13.2"). Less brand presence than Ooni but spec-comparable at the same price.
Solo Stove Pi Prime — $524
Why A-tier (gas + design): 30 lbs, gas-only, 950°F. Solo Stove's signature 304 stainless steel design is gorgeous. Slight premium over the Karu 12G for gas-only is the trade-off.
Solo Stove Pi (wood) — $525
Why A-tier (wood-fire authenticity): 30 lbs, wood-only by default (gas burner is separate $200 accessory). 900°F. Same beautiful design as the Pi Prime but wood-fire authenticity. Slower preheat (30 min) and slower recovery (4 min) is the cost.
B-tier — value portable
Ooni Fyra 12 — $349
Why B-tier (cheapest wood): 22 lbs, pellet-fed wood, 950°F. Cheapest portable in the category. Pellet hopper auto-feeds — less constant tending than log-fed wood. Trade-off: pellet running cost ($15-25/session for premium hardwood pellets).
The Roccbox question
The Gozney Roccbox at 44 lbs is technically portable (built-in carry handle, foldable legs) but our portability cutoff is 35 lbs. It's the heaviest "portable" in the category and not realistically a one-person carry. We covered it in the Ooni vs Gozney comparison.
What "portable" means in practice
| Use case | Required portability |
|---|---|
| Camping / tailgating | Must be one-person carry (under 30 lbs ideal) |
| Apartment balcony → patio | Frequent moves of 10-30 ft, under 35 lbs |
| Storage between use | Fits in standard storage shed / garage shelf |
| Travel in a sedan | Compact dimensions, under 30 lbs |
| Travel in a truck / SUV | Up to 50 lbs OK if 2-person carry acceptable |
Decision matrix
| If you want... | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum capability + portability balance | Ooni Karu 12G | Multi-fuel + 27.6 lbs is rare combination |
| Cheapest portable Neapolitan | Ooni Fyra 12 ($349) | Wood-fire authenticity at lowest entry point |
| Cheapest gas portable | Ooni Koda 12 ($399) | Lightest at 20.4 lbs |
| Multi-fuel value pick | Bertello Grande 1500 | Comparable to Karu 12G at same $449 price |
| Most beautiful design | Solo Stove Pi or Pi Prime | 304 stainless steel + signature airflow aesthetic |
| Pure wood-fire portable | Ooni Fyra (pellets) or Solo Stove Pi (logs) | Different fuel mechanisms; pellets easier, logs more authentic |

FAQ
Can I leave a portable oven outside permanently?
Most are stainless steel and weather-resistant, but cover them when not in use. Ovens with ceramic insulation (Karu 12G, Roccbox) handle weather better. Always store the stone indoors to prevent moisture absorption.
How much fuel do these use?
Gas: ~$1-3 per session (propane, ~30,000 BTU). Pellets: $5-10 per session. Wood logs: $5-15 per session for premium hardwood.
Are portable ovens hot enough for true Neapolitan?
Most reach 950°F — yes, Neapolitan-capable. The Solo Stove Pi caps at 900°F (just shy of the 1,000°F Italian Neapolitan standard but acceptable for the style at home).
Will the Karu 12G actually fit in a car?
Yes. Dimensions are 23.7 × 16.4 × 13.2" — fits in most sedan trunks with the chimney removed.
